Snorkelling on Magnetic Island
Magnetic Island snorkelling: the bays the parks service recommends, Geoffrey Bay's snorkel trail, stinger suits and nets, the Discovery Tour by boat and the reef day to the underwater museum.
Magnetic Island’s snorkelling is on fringing reefs close to shore. Queensland’s parks service points to the northern sides of Florence and Arthur bays first, and says the reefs in Nelly, Geoffrey and Picnic bays are also good. You can swim out from the beach at all of them, but the bays with no road are easier by boat, and Aquascene’s Discovery Tour takes you to several in one morning, with the gear, a lesson and stinger suits included.
The Discovery Tour costs from US$126 on GetYourGuide (checked October 2026) and from US$128 on Viator (checked October 2026), and meets on Peppers Resort’s deck beside the Nelly Bay ferry terminal:

The bays
| Bay | Snorkelling | Getting there |
|---|---|---|
| Florence Bay | Reef on the northern side | A walk from the Forts Junction (1.8 km) or by boat; Isle Hire’s cars may not drive there |
| Arthur Bay | Reef on the northern side | A walk from the Forts Junction (1 km) or by boat |
| Geoffrey Bay | A marked snorkel trail off the beach at Arcadia | Bus 250 to Arcadia |
| Alma Bay | Not on the parks service’s snorkel list; a swimming beach with no net, and a lifeguard every day by Townsville City Council’s roster (the parks service lists weekend and school-holiday patrols; services may change) | Bus 250 to Arcadia |
| Nelly Bay | Reef in the bay, with a second marked snorkel trail | A walk from the ferry terminal |
| Picnic Bay | Reef in the bay; a stinger net in season | Bus 250 to Picnic Bay |
Snorkel spots and walking distances from Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, the snorkel trails from Tourism and Events Queensland, lifeguards and nets from Townsville City Council, all checked October 2026.
The parks service’s advice: avoid low tide, when the reef is close to the surface, snorkel with a buddy, and do not stand on or touch coral. Geoffrey Bay’s trail is marked with numbered floats on the surface and lettered ones below it.

Green zones
The water around Magnetic Island is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Fishing is not allowed in the Marine National Park (green) zones in Geoffrey, Alma, Florence, Gowrie, Radical, Balding and Five Beach bays; Arthur Bay and the coast west of Hawkings Point to West Point are yellow zones with limited fishing. Boats must anchor outside the reef protection markers.
Stingers and suits
Box jellyfish and Irukandji can be in the water at any time but are most likely in the warmer months; Townsville City Council’s stinger season is 1 November to 31 May. The parks service recommends a full-body lycra suit, and says the nets at Picnic Bay and Horseshoe Bay give a high degree of protection but are not stinger-proof. Douse any tropical jellyfish sting with vinegar for at least 30 seconds and get help. The Discovery Tour lends UV stinger suits, and wetsuits in the cooler months, June to September.
Snorkel tours
- The Discovery Tour (Aquascene): about five hours from Nelly Bay, snorkelling, a lesson, paddle boards and morning tea. Aquascene’s own page lists AUD 175 for adults (checked October 2026). Its booking page says the boat leaves at 8:15 and is back at 1:15 pm, its website 8:30; be on Peppers’ deck by 8:15, which means the 7:00 am ferry from Townsville (Monday to Saturday) or the 6:30.
- The Circumnavigation (Aquascene): five hours right around the island with snorkelling stops, glass-bottom boogie boards and, from June to September, whale watching; on GetYourGuide from US$126 (checked October 2026). You must catch the 7:45 SeaLink ferry from Townsville at the latest.
- From Townsville by boat: Aquascene’s Discovery Tour from Townsville leaves the Breakwater Marina at 7:30 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays only (meet 7:15), is back between 1:45 and 2 pm and needs no ferry ticket, from US$150 (checked October 2026).

The outer reef and the underwater museum
Magnetic Island’s own reefs are fringing reefs. For the Great Barrier Reef proper, Adrenalin Snorkel and Dive’s ten-hour reef day goes to John Brewer Reef, where the Museum of Underwater Art’s Coral Greenhouse sits underwater; it leaves Townsville at 7:00 or Nelly Bay at 7:50 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Sundays and occasionally Fridays, subject to weather and passenger numbers, and Adrenalin confirms each trip the afternoon before. Adrenalin’s own page prices the snorkel day at AUD 394 for adults and AUD 344 for children aged 6 to 11 (checked October 2026). There is no museum installation at Magnetic Island itself: after consulting community groups and the Traditional Owners of Magnetic Island and Palm Island, the museum decided not to install artworks there. Its Ocean Siren stands on the Strand in Townsville, facing the island.
